BLACKBIRD’S NEST

This work was commissioned for a stupendous restaurant, Blackbird Kitchen, in Bozeman, Montana.  Conceptually, I wanted to capture the feeling that this is 'home'...a place to come to… for community meals, the treasures of company, the memories and golden artifacts of experience. A home. A nest.

Nature is astounding! Living in this particular nook - for the year it took to come to life -  I tried to summon my 'inner bird' and come up with subtleties of weaving and quirks that the real creatures manage so effortlessly! Backgrounds are always tricky. When I had the idea for the eggshells, I knew I’d have to do it, but two solid months of that tweezer madness almost caused my own!

Blackbird's Nest, was selected to be included in the Mosaic Arts International 2011 exhibition at The Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin, Tx. in the Architectural category, so the original piece stayed in Bozeman and a full color printed photograph was represented at the show.

Materials: eggshells (duck, goose, hen), smalti, granite, marble, sandstone, petrified & driftwood, amethyst, metal shards, silk, feathers, crystals, volcanic stones and love!
