MADONNA

The subject of this piece is an impoverished woman I photographed in Mysore, India. In her beautiful sari, with aged hands and gnarled joints, she pleads for something much more than a few alms, something which feels universal to humanity. For peace. For compassion. My goal with this mosaic was not to recreate, in a technical way, a “realistic” portrait, but to capture in glass the intensity and emotion of her appeal. In this way, she may be seen as an icon.

Madonna was selected to be in the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts/Cutting Edges: Contemporary Mosaic Art show in June, 2009.

This piece was also chosen by SAMA (Society of Mosaic Artists) for their juried Chicago Navy Pier exhibition, 2010, and won ‘Best Two Dimensional Piece’ of the show.
